if the buttons are too big, could you double up the elastic? or use thicker stuff?

wow, i read my post from yesterday and realized that it made no sense at all. sorry about the temporary insanity! i meant that the elastics were to fat to fit through the shank button holes. i tried to poke it through with a needle, but no such luck. (sigh.....oh well
)

ok... well are the button shanks big enough to get a jump ring in? if so you could attach the elastic to the ring...?

ok - i have the worst digital camera ever made, but here are the cute buttons that won't fit on my fat elastics:
I bought them for 1.75 at joannes fabrics. they're so darned cute - i wish they would have worked! oh well, i'll find another project for them!

I really like the idea of attaching a jump ring to the button shank and then threading the elastic through the jump ring.
In fact, I bet a "split ring" would be even more secure. Split rings can be found in various sizes in the jewelry section of a craft store. They look like miniature key rings. You can put them on by opening them up with your fingernail or you can buy special pliers that make it even easier.
Maybe I'll get around to doing this and I'll take a picture of it...
