I want to make a corset-style top, but not put too much boning in it.

I've got my pattern from one of the many custom corset pattern sites, but I was wondering whether It would be possible to make a corset with (no?) or very little boning in it, and what sort of adjustments would I need to make?

Penguingrrl - those tails are awesome.  I love it!

Here's my finished product.  I wish you could see the pattern on the fabric better instead of it just looking all black.  It fits very well, but I need to try molded cups in the next one.  I'm making these to actually wear under my clothes.

Wow, that's AWESOME.  How much boning did you end up using?  It seems to support you excellently.

Thanks!  I only used about 8 "bones."  I actually used cable ties.  My step-dad's work just throws them away so I get them free.  The next one I do I'm going to double bone it on the seams because there was a custom one in a store that I tried on like that.  It was so comfortable.  Yes it does support well too!

Thanks for the info.

Another question:  How do you decide where to divide all the panels?  I still don't really get how to do it around the boobs... The cup is confusing the heck out of me.  I taped myself up and cut myself out (Yes, all alone, it was quite the adventure.)  Any tips, please?  How many panels did you guys end up doing?

It's five panels on each side and I used a simplicity pattern that I found for it.  My main alterations were that I added the front opening busk and a lining.  I'm going to do the tape method next time and I'm going to do the seams the way thixle describes on page 3.   One thing you might consider if you want a visual is go to a lingerie shop or dept store with a lingerie section and try on some things with boning.  Even a bustier in the bra section and you'll get the feel of where the boning should placed.  Try Fredericks of Hollywood, they have corsets like the dream corset that has a nice placing of bones.  Hope this helps!

I'm going nuts with this idea I found at "She Made This":

Wish I had thought of it myself. It's so simple and great.
