My mother would like to know what to do with the filled in purple areas where the wood has fallen off, the problem is that the staples show without the wood. Any ideas? shes sick of covering it with blankets.

do you have either of the old wood peices to use as a template?

In very simple terms:  I would get some foam core (or something similar)   and cut it out the same shape as the wood pieces, layer some batting over those pieces, and then get some fabric of your choice, that would go with the fabric of the couch, and put that over the batting.  Smooth it all out and wrap it around the foam core and the batting, making it as smooth as possible as you can on the back by trimming away extra fabric and batting, and then glue the whole thing back on to the couch.    You could do some extra work to make it look nicer by inserting some coordinating piping in between the foamcore and the couch.  Well, that's just an idea!  By the way, nice drawing of the couch!  Nice presentation!
