i just saw the coolest soap ever!  this woman makes goats milk soaps, and covers them with a thinnish layer of felted wool.  they are gorgeous, and very functional.  i didn't get a chance to pick her brain, so i'm wondering if anyone knows the technique?

Huh.  So kinda like soap and washcloth all in one?  Interesting -- and thanks for the link, islandpixie.  I didn't really get it until I saw the pics.  May have to try this one...

We felted soap yesterday! I was waiting for the roving to get here and it did! We also felted a rock - saw that one in a book - it was better to do when we were felting the soap because we didn't need extra soap!

hmmm...  very interesting.  I'd kind of like to try it, but I wouldn't know where to get roving.

does it loosen up at all when it gets wet, or does it stay felted?

Oh that is a great idea! Where do you get the roving.

You can buy roving on Ebay for about $5.99 to start, that I've found.

Or, look for local festivals this fall, I bet you could find a local sheep owner that does this stuff.  Support your local shepard. Give baaaaack to the community.  Grin

What I want to know, is can an old wool sweater be used as well? I've got a few that I could easily sacrifice for the fun of it.

It looks really cool, but I'm not sure if I get it.  What happens as the soap part dissapears?

This is awesome.  I was looking for some little thing to make for holiday gifts for all the girls in my Stitch n' Bitch and all those other little gifts one has to give around this time.  Now I'll make them all felty soap!

I ordered some roving from the site that has the tutorial - they offer a package where you get small bits of 40 different colors for $23.00.  They claim that it's enough to make 40 soaps, which is more than I intend to make, but it works out to be cheaper than buying the different colors "a la carte".
