Patchwork Decoupage Dr. Scholls

These shoes came to me as plain Dr. Scholl's exercise sandals...


I removed the leather strap, sanded the wood soles and decoupaged on bits of magazines and catalogs to create a patchwork look. I applied several coats of acrylic gel medium so they're waterproof and very durable. Then I reattached the strap. Voila! Patchwork Decoupage Dr. Scholls!

You sure did turn what could be a boring pair of shoes into something way more interesting! I went to some sort of suburban housewives party where one of the ladies sold decorated Dr. Scholls not as cute as yours for way over $100! I like those a lot--nice to know they are still comfy too!  Good job!

I love your shoes! I have a pair of plain Dr. Scholl's with a black strap that have been calling to me to be decorated.

How does the gel medium covered footbed feel on your foot? Does the shoe feel sticky against your skin? Also, how did you remove the strap? Any recommended tools?

The shoes feel a bit more sticky than they did as wood, but no more so than a rubber flip-flop or anything. The straps on these are held on by 6 screws, I just unscrewed them (with a butter knife because my screwdriver was downstairs and I was too lazy to go get it) and then screwed them back in when I was done. The gel medium kind of clogged up a couple of the holes that I wasn't diligent about keeping clear as I was working, so I had to gouge it out with a tiny pair of scissors.
