I adore crazy finds like that!  Would love to see a picture...there must be one somewhere.

I did take a picture, but our camera was stolen at a church  Angry (talk about irony)

I was thinking about making one for myself (out of fake birds) and a picture would have been very helpful. It was just so very deliciously strange/disgusting! I'll look at the V & A website to see if they have one.

You know, after seeing the pics you posted, I was just thinking, it would be bizarre but neato if somebody attempted to replicate these. They are so freaky, they bother me and yet... I can't look away. But leave it to the Victorians for something like this. Another of their crafts that I find somewhat disturbing yet not quite gross is hair jewelry, such as...http://victorianhairjewelry.com/victorianhairart.html

I wanna trade ATC's!

I was expecting that to be pretty gross, but it's actually quite beautiful and intricate, isn't it?

Damn you people, now I want to go back to the V&A! Angry
I haven't been there in almost 10 years, and I miss its hallowed halls with all of their crazy stuff. Cry

Good God! I am so upset and disturbed and flustered and wondering if I can do that in clay.

Guess who's back?

Despite your warning, I did cry out (literally, really).

GlassAttic --polymer clay "encyclopedia"

You could actually do something like these in various ways with polymer clay.... i.e., they could be all clay, or they could be mixed media (with purchased or salvaged fake heads, or with heads or other parts like beaks or fancy head feathers made from as other materials or found, like actual feathers embedded in the clay).  The clay parts could be all sculpted with colored clays (or even painted on top of), or the feathers for example could be overlapping cane slices, etc.).

You could even simulate the gold mounts with polymer clay and metallic powders, etc.... lotsa possibilities!
