I haven't participated in a craft challenge before so I was all excited I'd finally decided to try.  I had a bunch of shoes in my closet I could work with, but first I decided to try a pair of white sneakers.  I spent almost a month batiking them and waiting for them to dry only to discover that the method I'd used wouldn't work on sneakers like it does on t-shirts - the fabric was too think and the dye just snuck in behind the areas I'd tried to block off.  So no batiked shoes.

Then Saturday morning it came to me in a dream - literally.  I ran out to the thrift store yesterday searching for orange rain boots I'd seen there a few weeks ago.  Of course, as luck would have it, someone had bought the things that I thought would be terrible to wear.  How dare someone wear my craft challenge!  I did however find another pair of boots that, with a little alteration, would fit the idea perfectly.

I came home with a pair of children's cowboy boots and a clock.

I destroyed the clock (which was not easy - most of the screws were stripped) and the boots.  I cut a hole in the boots the size of the clock face, slipped the face into the space between the outside material and lining and screwed it in.  Then, I did a crochet chain stitch around the outside of the face to make a "lasso."  The clock works fine, but you can't really get to the alarm, so no alarm anymore, but that's okay.  You can get to the battery to change that.

If you want to see my failed attempt at the blue shoes, head over to http://yarn-tart.livejournal.com/ and see pretty much this post all over again, plus the other shoes.  Yay!

i'm a dye tachnichian by trade with special interests in batik, hope you won't find my suggestion to forward, was wondering if you tried painting the dye on, you can buy a medium - manutex - or even mixing your dye into flour to make a paste works, the dye has less of a tendency to run, it sits on the surface and the flour can create a textured effect... hopes this helps for future reference...  Smiley

Oh, wow, yes it helps!  And I appreciate suggestions for improvement.  I'm still kind of new to the whole dyeing thing, but I love it.  Now I must find something else to dye...

That is awesome, the boot clock!!! I was curious.. did you use any weight inside to balance out the heaviness of the clock face so it wouldnt tip over?Huh

It wasn't a problem at all.  The face is light and the sole of the boot acts as enough of a counterweight, but I'm sure if you used a lighter shoe or a heavier face it wouldn't be a big deal to add some weight inside the shoe.
