wow!

I'm worried my boyf is making me one for my birthday, but he doesn't really know what one is (other than it functions as his hands do at the moment...)

maybe I could just accidentally leave your page out where he'll see it Grin

LOL! Hey, you might as well just hand him the printed instructions.  My hubby refers to it as a spin thing. He's clueless as well; at least your bf can make you one!

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I am glad y'all find this useful.  Making one looks more complicated than it actually is, so I hope to see your swifts soon! Cheesy

THANK YOU      THANK YOU      THANK YOU
I just got back from Home Depot and got everything I need to make 3 of these. I for a freind that let be borrow her ball winder (I've had it quite a while - figure I ought to return it with something), I for a friend who is getting me my own ball winder at wholesale price, and of course one for me. Everything cost $21 so $7 each - not too bad.

I did have to make a couple of changes thought. They did not have 1 x 1 birch and I was afraid pine would warp so I'm doing the whole thing out of 1 x 2. Also the 5" hex bolts were only threaded about 1" down so I didn't really see how the nut would work. They had a threaded piece that you could cut but that seemed like more than I wanted to do so I'm using 1/4" machine screws - surely the difference between 3/8" and 1/4" won't matter.

Pix sometime this weekend.
