Cheap Chic Planters (with tute)
«
on:
March 28, 2006 09:25:43 AM »
Here's something I made last Spring, and I've finally made a little tute so I thought I'd post it.
Cheap Chic Planter
This is a cost effective way to have chic looking planters. Just use old yogurt containers as planters and you'll be recycling as well as creating cute stuff for your home.
Needed:
- used container plastic (yogurt, ice cream)
- old magazine
- outdoor mod podge (or something similiar for decoupaging)
- paint brush
- scissors
Instructions:
1. Cut out 2" by 2" squares from an old magazine. Try to find blocks of solid colours that you like and that match nicely. Cut out enough to cover the while container.
2. Paint a strip of mod podge onto the container, and place the paper squares onto the mod podge.
3. Add a layer of mod podge over the strip so it protects the paper from wetness and scuffing. Do step 2 & 3 all around the container, and try to evenly space them so it's all symmetrical.
4. Wait until it dries, carefully poke some holes in the bottom, and move a lovely plant into its new home. You can use the top of the container as a water catcher.
Hope you like it!

Woza!.....What a great idea
I love the idea of using the lid from the container to catch extra water...very practical.
I can't wait to start my garden growing, I think I'll use this clever idea to start off some of my seedlings. I plan on using loads of cheap materials to bring out the beauty in my backyard. Inculding upside-down hanging planters made from 2L pop bottles...perfect for growing cherry tomatoes and sweetpeas. I think I'll also recycle some old chicken wire and make a hanging strawberry planter. On top of this Im going to attempt to make my own small scale compost for fruit/veggie scraps (problem is making it Racoon proof!). I am sooo excited I just can't wait till things start heating up again.
DO you have any other ideas about indoor planting? I have a serious thirst for cool cheap garden ideas!

What a great idea, those old yogurt containers are always so ugly, and I never figured out how to make them look nicer, but now YOU have! Good work.

Great ideas
emotionaltelephone
! I saw in a magazine, somewhere, they used old glass jars to plant stuff, it looks really neat cause you can see the dirt. I thought of doing that to grow some indoor herbs. Maybe pickle jars would work well.
glad all you guys like the idea. Post some pics of your version when you're done, I'd love to see!

Hey maybe I'll record my gardens progress over the season, then I'll post it on craftster....it's not entirely craft related though. Well, I do plan to redecorate my porch too with a recon coffe table and new covered coushions. Heck I might as well share it with the world!!!
elmonerd - the glass jars are a great notion, I wonder if you could see any roots growing too? that would be neat. oooh if really pretty rocks or sand was used too... it would look splendid!
I love the idea of terrariiums you could add such interesting things to them ahhhh I feel another project comming on!
