Double Sided Stockinette Stitch Tutorial
«

There's a way of making doubled up knitting that is stockinette all the way around without having to use dpn or circulars.
You cast on an even number, then it goes: knit one, bring yarn forward between needles, slip the next stitch as if to purl it, put the yarn to the back Repeat that whole set of things across ending with the slipped stitch. Start again on the next row. Repeat till you have a scarf.
What you end up with is a tube with stockinette on all the sides. My mom makes scarves like this all the time and they're super. They look really good, and they're warm. I made one once too, and I like the pattern even though I'm The World's Slowest Knitter. Hope that helps!

- is that the infamous double knitting? I've heard of it, I just didn't know what it was. Mystery solved!

I put together a little pictorial of me doing this stitch. You can find it here:
http://www.beppycat.com/double%20layer
Here's a picture of the little swatch I made taken off the needle. You can see that it makes two separate layers here in this pic.
Hope it helps!

Hey BeppyCat, that's super cool. I did a wee bit of research, and it's not quite double knitting - it's like half of double knitting.
In double knitting, you'd carry 2 pieces (usually different colors) of yarn, and knit with color a (where you're knitting) and purl with color b (where you're slipping) then when you go back the other way you knit with b (where you knit) and purl with a (where you slip) that way you get your same tube, but one side is one color and the other side is the other color. You can also do funky color patterns where (it's no longer a tube) basically, the MC is color A on side 1 and color B on side 2 and the CC is color B on side 1 and color A on side 2. there's a really hideously tacky heart potholder pattern on knitting.about.com if you want to see what I'm talking about.

this is really cool! i bet it would make nice straps for tanks and halters, or just take the place of i-cords in general. why is it that i-cords seem somehow undesirable to me? i think they make me think of rope or something. no ropes on my clothes, please! hehe.

Melidomi, thanks for splitting this off, maybe someone will find it now and think it's way helpful.
I had a feeling that double knitting was something much more complicated than this. I'm so not a knitter, it's funny. That's why my little swatch is so narrow, I had to in order to be able to make it long enough for you to see it, lol. But I'm really glad the pictures are helpful. It's a stitch my mom taught me and about the most complex knitting thing I can do in practice. In theory, I know all about knitting, hehe.

or just take the place of i-cords in general.
Seems to me that the results are going to be the same - the technique here is circular knitting done with two needles, and i-cord is a flat piece of knitting pulled into a tube, but what you wind up with isn't going to be all that different.

WHOA! This is by far my new favorite way to knit!!! You are my heroine of the week
Thanks so much. The pictures are GREAT!
I have a question: how much yard does ths method use up? Is it about the same amount as knitting regularly? I know the stockinette tubing method uses twice as much yarn...
