I am attempting to insert zipper, but I am confused where you say :  catch gussett in side seams. How much of gussett is sew in the side seam of lining. Hope my question is making sense.  Thanks so much for your tutorial, maybe one day I will be able share a tutorial.  Thanks Barbara

Hi Barbara,

You catch the whole of the gusset into the side seam and you line the edges of the gusset up with the side seams of the lining.  Hope this makes sense!!  If not, I can post a picture.

First of all, thank you so much for this tutorial! I have been struggling with putting zippers on top of my bags for a while and now this all makes sense! TADA!

Second, I am wondering if anyone knows how to put a top zipper on a bag that already has a gusset (so not a Jordy bag). It sort of seems like this method won't work for a bag with a gusset... hmmmmm...

I want to add a gusseted zipper to a square bag. Is that possible? I'm making something similar to the "Pleatness Bag" and would like for that zipper to not be at the top of the bag so that I can do a fun little tab with a brooch on it.

Looking at my personal store bought bag that is similar, I see that they don't attach the gusset at the ends of the bag. I could do that, but I'm wondering if I did something similar to your tabs at the ends of the zipper, only make the entire width of the gussets and the zipper have a tab and sew that to the end of the lining...if that'd work.

If you did a square version, the zipper would sit too far down in the bag to make it practical.

To make the square bag possible, you would make the gusset like you said with your store bought bag - ie. it would be open at either end.

I can't remember the exact size of the zip (the brown bag and the black/pink bag are two different sizes) however you need a zip an inch or two shorter than the width of the top of your bag.

i have a 12inch zip so im hoping to work off of that.imvery sorry to be a pain, im normally a dress person so braving my first handbag attempt.

is there anyway you could give me some pattern dimensions, ie size of cuts to use?
