Every time I say "I don't know what to cross-stitch next" my roommate says "me!" so I think it would be funny to do a little mini-portrait.  I don't want to do anything elaborate like a custom portrait, just a litle picture of a girl and I'll give it red hair so it's obviously her (you can spot this girl from a mile away!).

Can anyone point me in the direction of free patterns of faces?  I can't find anything good.

Look at this thread: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=86051.0

That's a cross stitch I am currently doing from a picture of my mom. So to do your portrait, you could download a cross stitching demo software (I recommend Cross Stitch Professional 2003), upload the picture, edit the colours (because the software often messes them up quite a bit!) and then paste your printscreens into Paint to obtain a perfect picture (because the demo won't let you save or print your own patterns).  It's a lot of work, but the results are great.
