Hey all,
Not sure if there is anything like this up here yet, but I thought I'd go ahead and put it down as my first posting!  I write a craft column for a local paper, so I'm just going to go ahead and post the pictures and instructions that were published here online.

Materials:

5-inch balloons

10 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2  inch paintbrush (under a dollar at the hardware store)

Baking sheet covered with waxed paper

Small saucepan

Scissors

Directions:

1. Melt chocolate according to directions on package in saucepan.

2. Blow up balloon to the size of a tennis ball.

3. Paint lukewarm chocolate on lower half of balloon in scalloped shape. Be sure to paint a thick coat.

4. Stand up on baking sheet. Refrigerate for two hours.

5. Remove tray from refrigerator, and cut a small slit in the balloon to deflate.

6. Carefully remove balloon from chocolate. Return bowl to refrigerator until ready for use.

7. Fill with fruit, candy, pudding or ice cream.

hey i have a question.....does the chocolate taste like balloon?  haha...come on, i know someone else wondered that too.  when you leave the balloon in there that long, and then peal it away, doesn't it leave a balloon-taste in there even a little bit?

Hey there!
The bowls last as long as you refrigerate them... as far as I know! Smiley  They haven't lasted that long at my house, because they don't taste like balloon at all, they're delicious!  I think the balloon taste is inside the balloon....

Now, when you say "stand the balloon up on the tray" i have a sinking feeling that this is where i'll go wrong. Standing up balloons isn't my forte. However, could you just kind of sit the balloon in a larger bowl to cool?

I made one once. Don't blow your ballon too big cause let me tell you, you don't want it to pop. Talk about a sweet room. There was chocolate all over the place.

I'm a chocoholic, and this sounds easy enough to do...if I can get the chocolate from the pan to the balloons without my mouth causing distractions and detours, heh.

I'm going to have to try this, go off the diet just one day!  I can already imagine what my kitchen will look like after though! I bet they would look good in white chocolate too, or even color white chocolate to pink with food coloring......

Hey-- to those who are worried about what will happen after you apply the chocolate to the balloon:
No, you don't have to stand there holding it Smiley  The chocolate on the balloon will stick to the wax paper when you set it down and hold it in place while it's drying. That way you will have a flat bottom to your bowl to hold it up when you serve your dessert.

Howdy - just seen this via facebook and totally awesome it is too!

I ahve a latex allergy so handling balloons is not on the cards!  What would you use instead?

Kind regards,

Kelly

Hey there greenline-

You saw it via facebook?  I didn't know you could do that!  How does that all work?

Hm... Alternatives to latex.. they must make some kind of latex free balloon for kids that are allergic, right?  Or maybe you could use a latex-free rubber glove and blow it up and use the non-finger side Smiley

So I tried this. And it worked...for the most part. One bowl wasn't thick enough and collapsed on itself. And then I was coating one balloon with chocolate when it decided to pop. My brothers came running when they heard me squeal and almost died laughing when they saw me covered in chocolate and pieces of balloon.

Overall, though, it was a success. I served chocolate mousse and creme brulee topped with fresh raspberries, and it looked soooo nice.

i made these for dessert for a valentine dinner party i threw this weekend, and they turned out AWESOME!  i used Alton Brown's chocolate mousse recipe from foodnetwork.com to fill the bowls.

after i blew up the balloons, i dipped the bottoms in dish water and rinsed them off, my bf was afraid the chocolate would taste like balloon.. there was no balloon taste, but i'm not sure if there would have been otherwise.  if you do rinse your balloons, just be sure they're dry before you dip them or the chocolate will sieze.

instead of painting on the chocolate, i just dipped the balloons in the melted chocolate and lined my baking sheet with parchment paper to keep them from sticking to the pan.

the hardest part is waiting for the chocolate to melt. Smiley thank you so much for this great idea!

I made two of these tonight (well technically 3...)! I just melted some chips then smoothed it onto the balloon with a spoon. I wanted one with white chocolate and oreo so I mixed the oreos in before putting it on the balloon.. BAD idea, the oreo pieces are waaay to heavy and drag the chocolate down as they slide and fall off Sad Then I went to put it in the refrigerator, I knelt down to put it on the bottom shelf when BAM! the balloon pops and white chocolate/oreo goes EVERYWHERE! I was so sad. Luckily, my next two were successful! Thanks for posting this!

Here are my bowls:
