really the best yarn store in ames is called "the rosetree fiber shop" it is near campus...i cant remember the street but it is next to the "thumbs" bar and "west street deli." Also i really love the antique mall on mainstreet....everytime i go there i get funky jewelry....it is absolutely PACKED with antique-y goodness(with 2 1/2 floors you would think so right?) and then there is always hobby lobby and jo-annes as well as goodwill and salvation army....do you know of any good places in ames, des moines, or anywhere in between?

oh...and what is ben franklin? i've never heard of it before!

In Iowa City I love houseworks, they usually have good bales of fabric that are vintage and are good sized for clutches.

There is a "traditional" craft store on University Ave in East Des Moines, about 5 blocks west of the fairgrounds.  Its name is Clayton's and has lots of cake decorating supplies, macrame, and embroidery supplies.  It has the best select of Aunt Martha's patterns around.

If you want to experience a Ben Franklin first hand go to main street in Nevada.  There is one there.  Then go to Starbuck's Drive Thru on east Linconlway and get a homemade tenderloin and some sherbet.  MMM....Starbuck's.

See New in Iowa post for other crafty stores in the Ames area.

I've decided that I really like Crowded Closet in Iowa City.  If you go straight to the back when you enter they have a crafty section with fabric, yarn, patterns, mags, lace, TONS of buttons, all kinds of sewing notions, embroidery notions, and sometimes they have knitting needles, too.  It's great.  I go there for a lot of supplies since it's fabulously cheap.  This week they're having a half price sale on their buttons.
