I was wondering if anyone else would like to create a list of craft stores, etc in Iowa.

I will start by listing the places (that I know about) in Iowa City:

Reminisce (Coralville Strip - scrapbooking, paper, stamping)
Hobby Lobby (Coralville Strip)
Jo-Ann Fabric (Riverside Drive, Iowa City)
Hancock Fabric (Iowa City)
The Knitting Shoppe (Muscatine Avenue, Iowa City)
Ben Franklin (Sycamore Mall)
Dawn's Hide and Bead Away (East Washington Street, Iowa City)

I'd love to hear from anyone else in the area or throughout Iowa.  Tell me about great places in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, etc....

My parents live near Dubuque, so I try to stock up on craft things when I'm visiting (I live in Boston now, so it's hard to get to the mega-craft stores). DBQ has a Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Jo-Ann, Ben Franklin, and there's a really cute scrapbooking shop downtown on Bluff St, but I can't remember the name of it. Lots of excellent thrifting in DBQ as well--2 St Vinnie's, Goodwill, Mission Thrift Store.

The other (huge) one is in the West End/Asbury...I think Radford Road? It's all the way at the end of Pennsylvania.

I'm moving to Davenport this summer. Does anyone know of any cool fabric shops in the QC?

Thanks for the info on yarn shops.

I am from Davenport (live in Oklahoma now, but Davenport is my "home"),
besides good ol Wal-Mart, you got
Hobby Lobby (actually in Bettendorf)
Joannes (next to K-mart on Kimberly)
there is a scrapbook store on 53rd St
there is a knitting/yarn store and I cannot think where it is at (my b-friends mom-in-law works there) I want to say it is on Jersey Ridge heading towards the east village, dont qutoe me on that.

But the Quad Cities in general had the best thrift stores of anywhere I have ever been (I have a friend here in Oklahoma who's Dad coincidnetally lives in Bettendorf), she goes up at least twice a year just to shop at the thirft stores, and when i go home to visit, I usually spend at least one full day hitting all the good ones (the DAV on Kimberly and Marquette is the Best and the Rock Island Salvation Army). Also, people have the BEST GARAGE SALES! I cant seem to figure out why, but the quad cities ROCKS in garage sales.

In Iowa City I love houseworks, they usually have good bales of fabric that are vintage and are good sized for clutches.

There is a "traditional" craft store on University Ave in East Des Moines, about 5 blocks west of the fairgrounds.  Its name is Clayton's and has lots of cake decorating supplies, macrame, and embroidery supplies.  It has the best select of Aunt Martha's patterns around.

If you want to experience a Ben Franklin first hand go to main street in Nevada.  There is one there.  Then go to Starbuck's Drive Thru on east Linconlway and get a homemade tenderloin and some sherbet.  MMM....Starbuck's.

See New in Iowa post for other crafty stores in the Ames area.

I've decided that I really like Crowded Closet in Iowa City.  If you go straight to the back when you enter they have a crafty section with fabric, yarn, patterns, mags, lace, TONS of buttons, all kinds of sewing notions, embroidery notions, and sometimes they have knitting needles, too.  It's great.  I go there for a lot of supplies since it's fabulously cheap.  This week they're having a half price sale on their buttons.

Huh Is it a new craft shop???

Stitches Galore is in Cedar Rapids, just off highway 380.  If you look just south of Collins Road where it intersects 380 you can see a green and white "Chzec Square" sign on a pole -- the strip on the south side of the square, houses the stitch shop. Just next door is a nice bead & yarn shop, and I'm drawing a blank on the name....

AnYWay, Stitches Galore is small, but well-packed; great customer service (if you can get there when they are open); not a lot of stuff, but high quality (it's the only place I've found actual silk embroidery thread in a range of colors); and high-end sewing machines.

 Smiley

i can't remember how to spell "Chzec" -- I've a few ancestors are probably spinning in their graves now....
