I love to swing dance and just found a place that holds dances once a week! I have decided that I want to make a skirt for swing dancing, has anyone made any before? If so what style do you find works best? Or for those of you who know about skirts and stuff, what do you think would be suitable?

I've never made any before, but I'd guess that if you want it to twirl nice, use a medium thickness fabric, two way stretch knits would be pretty swinging, I would think. Circle skirts look nice when they twirl.

I swing dance too Smiley But I haven't made any clothes yet that fit.

I started to learn to swing dance... and then found out I dont have much rhythm Tongue

I would say a knee length circle skirt and a petticoat would be suffice.

When my mom used to make them for me when I was little, it was just really basic, with one or two layers, and that thick elastic waist banding at the top. Im sure you could go for a fitted band too... but the elastic was always a lot easier to fit onto the skit I think...

Thanks for your replies, I think I am going to try to make a circle skirt then! I wonder if I can make a knee length and a floor lenth one? I guess I will have to see, if I had a working camera I would post pics after I am done, but I dont. if anyone has other ideas I welcome those too!

If you're going for a floor length circle skirt the best way to do that is tomake two semi circles and then stitch them together into one large circle.

Here's a link to a 50s style circle skirt pattern:

there's a tutorial for circle skirts (and lots of variations on the circle skirt) at www.WhatTheCraft.co m.  lots of pictures so you can see what it looks like when you're finished.

I totally just started getting into swing dancing too...I am going to attempt to make a skirt also.  I think you want knee length! Long wouldn't look right when you dance.

My advice is:

If you're going to wear a circle skirt, make sure you've got some tap pants (shorts) or some underwear that you dont mind everyone else seeing.  Wink
