I opened my package from Porfiry and found this amazing little guy:

Inside was a CD case titled "Porfiry's Jazz Mix" with the quote from Louis Armstrong:  if you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know.

And here's all of the great tracks:

Thanks, Porfiry!  Great job--I love it all and have been listening to this super-cool mix since it arrived.
Props to you too, Nushy, for organizing the swap!

Oh my goodness!! What an AMAZING package!!! I am astounded, and feel extremely inadequate over the CDs I haven't sent yet. (PO closed due to short staffed-ness. preg_replace('/(.{49})/', '$1 ', 'GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.'))

This is why is was SO HARD to put you guys in groups. I wanted music from ALL of you! (I've only been "into" jazz/blues for a year or so, and my collection is rather small.)

Fabulous job, Anne!

Awwwwwww.... thanks guys, I'm glad you like the monster case.  Seriously though, no one should feel ashamed of their packages/cds!  My husband and I have almost no life and so it was a toss-up between cracking out on old episodes of 24, or doing something constructive.  I opted for the latter and the monster guys were born.

Nushy, cover your eyes if you don't want to spoil your surprise, but....

I got Hgflower's CD on Wednesday night and regret that I didn't get to post OR to listen to it till today.  I've been down with a migraine, and it's a cruel joke to have a new CD when you suffer at the tiniest bit of sound.  Anyway, it came in particularly handy today because I was stuck in rush hour traffic and running late for a continuing education seminar -- for which there are dire consequences if you're too late to sign in -- and I was able to pop Hg's CD into my new car's CD player (sorry, I'm still so excited!!!!) and jazz my way along the streets of DC.

Under a cover of Schroeder from Peanuts doing his thing at the piano, we have:

1.  Linus & Lucy -- Vince Guaraldi Trio
2.  Nice Work -- Sting
3.  I Ain't Got Nobody -- Sammy Davis, Jr.
4.  Watermelon Island -- Edgar Djangirov
5.  Since I Don't Have You -- Brian Setzer Orchestra
6.  Take Five -- Dave Brubeck Quartet
7.  Night & Day -- Ella Fitzgerald
8.  T'aint Nobody's Business -- Otis Spann
9.  Time to Blow -- Del Paxton
10. At Last -- Etta James
11. Skating -- Vince Guaraldi Trio
12. Embrace Me -- Gabriela Anders
13. It Don't Mean a Thing -- Louis Armstrong
14. What Is This Thing Called Love -- Lemar
15. Stormy Monday Blues -- Bobby Blue Band
16. Minnie the Moocher -- Cab Calloway
17. Satin Doll -- Cerritos High School Jazz Band   (yes, your school IS talented -- don't tell me that fabulous singer was in high school too?!?)
18. Rhapsody in Blue -- Gershwin

You've got fabulous taste, my dear.  Thanks so much for the wonderful mix!

I received from Krajackex!  She sent an AWESOME cd, and the cover art is beautiful.  Also, she sent a saxophone decal!  It's super cool because it looks like a tenor, which is what I used to play!!   Cheesy

The pictures:

and the cd cover w/the decal:

And the super-cool playlist:
Can't We Be Friends -- Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
Chain of Fools -- Aretha Franklin
I Get Along Without You Very Well -- Linda Ronstadt
Straighten Up and Fly Right -- Linda Ronstadt
You're the Top -- Ella Fitzgerald
It's All Right With Me -- Ella
It's De-Lovely -- Ella
Take the A-Train -- Duke Ellington
Dewey -- The Yellowjackets
Freddie Freeloader -- Miles Davis
Soulful Strut -- The Astronauts
Cowbell Boogie -- Fred Jackson (ha!  I put this on her cd, too!!)
Bubble House -- Medeski, Martin & Wood
Jelly Belly -- Medeski, Martin & Wood
River Waltz -- The Yellowjackets
Azure Moon -- The Yellowjackets
Untitled -- Unknown (the tune is Stompin' At the Savoy and it sounds like Milt Jackson?)

The cd is GREAT!  Thanks Krajackex, and thanks Nushybum for organizing this awesome swap.   Wink

so i got nushy's cd today Smiley i can't wait to listen to it, but i had to take a picture first since i'm so behind on updating!

twowishes sent me two cd's which are featured in the middle; her cd's are so good my mom stole them!
nushy did a beautiful sketch of ella fitzgerald on the cover of my insert. i'm amazed at people who can sketch and draw. i'm a cheater! i traced the image of schroder onto both covers for nushy and twowishes (as seen on top) i wish i could draw on my own without having to cheat  Tongue
thanks again for organizing this great swap!!

I received my cd from GreatBallofFire on Monday night.  It was really good timing after a pretty bad few days and is appreciated very much!

I like the nostalgic cover and title and my favorite color is pink, so it's perfect for me!  Wink

I think maybe she is going to send me a playlist at a later date, so I can't post it now.
It is a really great jazz mix though- with some songs that I'm familiar with, but not these versions and other totally new ones to me.  That's what's so great about jazz:  you can hear the same song done a thousand different ways.

Thanks again Kristina, I love the cd!

I know she's been very busy lately, so hopefully she won't mind if I post the cds I sent her.

Here they are with a little note and a couple sheets of stickers:

I tried to vary the jazz and blues pretty equally, but anyway here are the playlists:
1) In A Sentimental Mood-Duke Ellington
2) The Thrill Is Gone-B.B. King
3) At Last-Etta James
4) She Caught The Katy & Left Me A Mule To Ride- Taj Mahal
5) St. Louis Blues- Louis Armstrong
6) John Hardy-   Leadbelly
7) Jive At Five-   Count Basie
8: Got My Mojo Working-   Muddy Waters
9) So What- Miles Davis
10) Well, Well, Well- Ben Harper & The Blind Boys Of Alabama
11) Work Song   - Nina Simone
12) Parchman Farm Blues- Bukka White
13) Like Someone In Love- John Coltrane
14) Where Did You Sleep Last Night- Leadbelly
15) Ne Me Quitte Pas- Nina Simone
16) Farther On Down The Road-Taj Mahal
17) Under a Blanket of Blue- Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald    *seems like everyone included a different song from this duo!
18) Frankie- Mississippi John Hurt
19) Take Five- The Dave Brubeck Quartet
20) Tell Mamma- Janis Joplin

1) Johnny Too Bad- Taj Mahal
2) Gone With The Wind- Art Tatum, Ben Webster, Red Callender, & Bill Douglass
3) The Girl From Ipanema   - Stan Getz & Joo Gilberto
4) Gin House Blues- Nina Simone
5) The Mooche- Duke Ellington
6) Didn't Old John Cross The Water-   Leadbelly
7) I Love Paris-   Ella Fitzgerald
8: Black Snake Moan- Blind Lemon Jefferson
9) Imitation Of A Kiss- The Jazz Passengers with Deborah Harry
10) Ball And Chain- Janis Joplin
11) Theme From Samson And Delilah- Nina Simone
12) La Vie En Rose- Louis Armstrong
13) Take A Giant Step- Taj Mahal
14) I'm A Steady Rollin' Man- Robert Johnson
15) Kojo No Tsuki- Lee Konitz
16) Texas Woman Blues- Taj Mahal
17) Star Dust- Django Reinhardt & Coleman Hawk
18) If I Can't Have You- Etta James & Harry Fuqua

I've really enjoyed looking at everyone's playlists, that's really a lot of jazz between us all!  Thanks again for such a great swap nushy!! Smiley

I received mine over the weekend...thank you so much jnaos and bethyg.

Unfortunately, I was so eager to play the one that Bethyg sent me that I forgot to take a pic prior to playing it and somehow the label got stuck in my cd player and ripped off.  I am soooo sorry I don't have pics.  Do you have any bethy?  It was an awesome cd with a bunch of White Stripes songs on it that I love.

I also received from Jnaos who made an incredible cd holder and went way and above what the swap called for.  I love the Vonda cd...I loved her on Ally McBeal!  For some reason, I completely suck at the imaging thingy on here, so please see my blog www.whiskeychica.blogspot.com to see the awesome pics!

i do actually have a pic for such an occurrence! however there is a catch- i made two slightly different covers based on a few sketches i did a while back. I'm not sure which i sent to who! anyways I'll post both so please don't label me bragging!
...i am proud of them however
here they are:

I'm wondering which i sent to whom now- i decided it'd be a fun surprise though.

I received from FRAUGHT yesterday!  She sent TWO cds, and the tracklists are awesome.  I meant to bring them along to work so that I could transpose the lists, but, well, it was early and I hadn't had coffee.... so I didn't bring them.  But, I do have photos!!

The cloth cd holder and the cd cover:

and the cds she decorated!  So cool!!

Please excuse the blinding flash reflection... the sun doesn't rise in Ohio until like 7:30, and unfortunately I am awake way before then....   Undecided

But, this swap was awesome!  Thank you krajackex and FRAUGHT for the super music, and thanks nushybum for organizing!!!  Next we should do an "obscure jazz subgenre" swap.   Grin

To those who got my packages: I am sorry. Due to technical difficulty, my darling bf had to burn the cd's on his 'puter, and it never occured to him to save the playlists! He's a computer genius however, and I'm trying to convince him to attempt to find it in the great beyond of his GIANT hard drive.

PS Spiderdust.... I LOOOOOOVE THE CD'S!

It looks like my cd from qt37 has finally shown up.

There were no artists listed, except for the fact that there's a lot of Frank Sinatra, so I'm not sure about most of it but I managed to pick out a couple of other voices.

Here is the pic and playlist:

All That Jazz   ??
My Romance   ??
Fly Me to the Moon   Frank Sinatra
April in Paris   Frank Sinatra
I'm in the Mood for Love   ??
I've Got You Under My Skin   Frank Sinatra
Luck Be a Lady Tonight   Frank Sinatra
The Lady is a Tramp   Frank Sinatra
Summer Wind   Frank Sinatra
Unforgettable   Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole
Have You Ever Loved   ??
Lucky You   ??
Can't Hide Love   ??
Smooth Jazz   ??
Cabaret   ??
New York New York   ??
Feeling Good   Nina Simone

Thanks for the music qt37.  Smiley

I received my cd from my wonderful angel, bubba*tink.

I have to say, I love everything about it!  The cover art and colors, and especially the music.  It is perfectly to my taste.

All of the songs save a couple are new to me.  I'm really *jazzed* to have more Django.  Cheesy

Thanks so much bubba*tink, the music is greatly appreciated and will be played often.

hurrah!!!  I'm so glad you like it!!  When I first became obsessed with jazz and blues, I picked up as many cds as I could (afford...) and found some really amazing artists that I never would have heard of.  I'm just glad I could share them with you, Spiderdust and GreatBallofFire!

I can tell you, Fall is composed of

1 part dead fish smell
1 part wet leaves
1 part arctic chilled air (not winter chilled variety)
2 parts crunchy walking
a pinch very cold rain
some apples you picked yourself
a few very still moments
a good deal of inner reflection

Ok, my favorite by far is Nina Simone.  She's really a stylistic vocalist who covered many genres, but I think she fits into "Jazz" nicely, as well as Jazz sub-genres and Blues.  She has a huge collection of recordings and has influenced many of today's artists.  You can't go wrong with her.  Enough gushing... Grin

Also in jazz, I really like Duke Ellington, anything from the kind of speakeasy-sounding 20's & 30's to his later stuff, Miles Davis, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday & Ella Fitzgerald.  You can never go wrong with Louis Armstrong either.

As for Blues, my fav. is Taj Mahal.  Most of his stuff has a earthy, bluesy vibe to it, but he can get really funky.  He also covers many genres, from reggae to folk.

Other then Taj, I like really early blues, the kind of sitting on your front porch pickin' style. Mississippi John Hurt, Leadbelly & Bukka White come to mind.

Alright, that's my two cents.  Have a lot of fun discovering new stuff!   Smiley

P.S. bubba*tink- I love your cd so much, I just had to tell you again.  I've been listening to it loads!

As well as a second round of this swap, which I hope to hold in early June (after exams, why is everything planned around school?!?!), I'd like to organise a similar swap called Jazzy Jazz, Bluesy Blues, which works around this concept:

In the old days when blues was fresh and jazz outrageous, they sang at bars like folk songs. There were no big deals about copyright and covers. They sang popular stuff that everyone knew, interpreting it as they wished. A jazzy CD which must have two interpretations of one song - what do you guys think?

I need to resend to twowished - parcel got lost in the post grrr - and Ianna I'll sort out your angel feedback when I'm back from holidays. (I'm in Vancouver!)

OTHERWISE, THANK YOU EVERYBODY! THIS SWAP HAS BEEN SO FUN, AND IT'S BEEN SO AMAZING BEING PUT INTO CONTACT WITH ALL YOU LADIES OF FABULOUS MUSICAL TASTE!!!

Thank you for being great participants & angel!

Love,Anushka xxxxx
