I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I've read this thread a few times and the one thing that continued to 'bug' me was all that cotton wadded up into the center of these things... I'd be afraid that it might harbor bacteria... yes I know that's what bleach and vinegar (though not together) are for. But that lead me to another thought... why not knit a few more stitches... a 2x4 rectangle and roll it up? That was you only have one layer of fabric that has to be treated. Further, you'd be able to see how 'clean' it was...

Maybe I'll try it and see...

if youve ever taken apart a tampon, thats basically how theyre made!

Yes, but (assuming you're talking about store-bought ones in your quote above) those are only used once, so bacteria growth between uses is not an issue.

I was reinforcing crhalls statement saying that storebought ones are made that way, and the square would be better for reusable because of bacteria growth, not the other way around.

The bacteria possibilities have been bothering me too...I've been thinking about a drawstring design...you could put batting, or whatever, into a long, narrow sack, cinch it up with the drawstring...which would double as a removal string...once it's out of your body and it's time for cleaning, the batting could be pulled out for cleaning and drying...it would also allow for faster drying...I followed the beginning of this thread & then took a craftster break, so maybe someone's already suggested this...anyway I haven't gotten around to doing this yet but when I do I think this is the design I will use.

I've never taken on apart, but I thought they were just layers, sewn thru the middle, then squished into the circular form.

Here's an example of what I meant....

Laid out flat

Rolled up with the string portion in the center.

That's a great design - have you given it a test drive yet? Does the roll,uh, stay rolled as you insert it?

Not yet!
Though I guess I could give it a 'dry run'  Wink for sizing and insertion testing.
