So, this weekend is my hairstylist's one year anniversary of having opened her own salon. She's an awesome 28-year-old entrepeneur, who happens to be covered in tattoos. Since I can't come to the anniversary party, I thought I'd make her a present. So I came up with this purse. The swallows are from the Stitch 'n Bitch Nation "Baby's First Tattoo" sweater.
The purse measures about 10" x 4". It is made with Caron cheap yearn in scarlet and black. I actually have yet to line it, but will do so with some black fabric, and then will sew on some buttons for closing it. I guess a zipper would work, but whatever. Since I didn't come up with the chart, I don't know if I can reproduce it here, but it's on P. 211 of SnBN. The swallows are each 15 sts wide and 19 sts tall.
-On US size 10.5 straight needles (6.5 mm), CO 45 sts.
-Work in St st until piece measures about 4.5" (This allows for the curling of the stockinette, so that the purse ends up at 4")
-On RS row, k5, then work in pattern for right-side swallow (15 sts), k5, work in pattern for left-side swallow (15 sts), k5
-Continue patten in St st
-Ending WS row, p one row
-After tidying up the loose threads, fold fabric rectangle in half, RS tog
-Pin both sides in place, then sew sides shut
-Fold lining fabric around purse (which is still inside-out), and stitch into a pouch.
-Sew lining pouch to purse around mouth of purse
-Affix whatever sort of closure you want
-Turn inside out
Can't wait to make one for myself now!
