I've always called it French Knitting (I'm from the UK), but we also used to call it Dolly Down the Cotton Reel (!) and used to make the Dolly by sticking 4 pins into a cotton reel. I don't know if that was just a family thing, or if that's what people in the UK call it - you don't tend to meet many people who've heard of it.

We had a really long one that 2 of my sisters and I had worked on over the years and eventually I wound it all round and stitched it into a place mat for a plant pot. I could never think of what else to do with the stuff!

I have a little machine that does the "French Knitting", so I didn't have to wear my fingers out with a bobbin & pins  (hee hee).  I guess it took me about a week to design and make.  As you can see, the zip section (sides) are just plain knitting, and the shoulder strap is woven on an inkle loom.  I sewed  a small pocket onto the inner lining before I made the lining up, then slip stitched it in.   Glad you like it, and thanks for the feedback.

Here's a photo of the actual machine, made by SIRDAR.  I haven't a clue where to buy it from in USA, sorry, maybe you should contact Sirdar direct.

wow the machine is so cool  Cheesy hehe I recently dug my french knitting woman thing out of the loft and I was going to use it to make cool hair falls bits... but the wool I had was too thick  Sad also I think I suck at this as I can't really remember how you do it I just guessed lol

oooh maybe the lime green luminous wool I bought for St Paddy's will work.. yes.. aaahhh I love that bag!!

It's a similar "ok, I've made this long line, now what the hell do I do with it?!" that you get for fingerknitting... except on a smaller scale!! I was trying to fingerknit a jumper... wasn't working so well lol

How bout some frenchknit arm warmers??
