Making a Tank ( pictures inside)
«
on:
February 26, 2006 07:28:42 AM »
Hey, so this is my first time posting, so I hope this is in the right place and that my pictrues show up!
So, I have this fabric that I want to make into a tank top, but I don't want to wreck it since I can't replace this fabric. Usually when I attempted to make a shirt, it turns out too small. This fabric is strechy also. So here's a picture of my fabric:
I want to make sort of a long loose tank, here are some examples:
Thanks for any help! xox

I don't know, but I LOVE these tank tops. American Apparel has something very similar that I own in about 6 different colors. If anyone has a pattern, I'd be excited to use it too. Maybe I can just model something off of my American Apparel tank tops? I could use them as a pattern.

Hm, so what's your question? Sorry..:S Uhm, you could always try making it bigger than you actually are, then when you actually put it on it will fit...as you said they always turn out smaller. :S
Also, off topic..but are you a member of F18 forums? I've seen your username there.

Hi! I'm brand new here, this is my first post. I think I have an idea that might help...
Do you have any fabric that isn't too important to you that you can use to make a mock-up with, then use the mock-up as a pattern?
If not, Muslin is normally pretty cheap.
I would take a tank that fits and basically trace it out on not important fabric, lengthen as needed, and just play around with it till you have a fit that you like. Then, rip out all the seams, and use that just like you would a paper pattern.
That's kinda what I did when I was trying to make a 14th century historical dress, and couldn't use a pattern b/c it was fitted, and didn't want to use up the fabric I planned to use for the dress.
I hope my suggestions are helpful, and make sense.
Good luck,
Reba

That fabric is really neat and I love the tank that you want to make. I am sorry that I am not much help, I am not very good at sewing without a pattern. So I would go and look for a pattern in the books, or I would find one cheap and take it a part to make a pattern. It is going to be a great shirt when you are done.

i have that fabric!
i only have a teensy bit though, i made cuffs out of it.
making a tank out of some other fabric is probably the best idea, but i wouldn't use muslin, you need to use someything with similar qualities to the fabric you want to use. so try to find something cheap with a similar amount of stretch, and go from there.
i usually try to find something that i like, but cheap, because i hate the idea of wasting the time by sewing an ugly garment! i almost always end up wearing my sample just as much as the finished result!
if you do that, i'd trace the pattern you create onto something, so that you don't have to rip apart your mock up to make the 2nd top.

thanks for the suggestions! I have a lot of this stripey stretchy fabric, I'm going to test out a pattern on that first, I'll let you know how it turns out!
