The original jeans were too short for me, but I didn't want to cut them off into capris because I would lose the embroidery detail that was on the bottoms of the legs (now seen on the front panel of the skirt).

So I ripped out the seams on the inside of the legs (longest part of the project, took about an hour and a half), and cut the fabric of both legs off at the knee.  After that, all I had to do was cut two triangular panels with the embroidery on them (the back of the skirt is the same as the front) and sew them into place.

The shape of the skirt is really neat when I've got it on, it fits snug on my hips and the tops of my legs (they were stretch jeans) and then flares out.  Because of the seams (from the original jeans) on the front and back panels, the bottom of the skirt assumes a shapea little like a lily, or a curved four-pointed star.

Not bad for my first sewing project ever, eh?  And if I can do this, anyone can.

OK, so the pic is working now (or at least for me  Smiley  )    If you still can't see it, it's Photobucket's fault.

Cheerio,

Thanks for the compliments!  One tip:  Make sure you cut off the legs EXACTLY halfway down (or you could do it shorter, I guess) or it comes out unevenly.  I found this out the hard way, but luckily had not cut the fabric off before I discovered my mistake.  Good luck and I'd like to see your results if anyone tries this out.

By the way, does anyone know of a way to stop sewing machine needles from breaking when you sew through thick fabric like denim  (short of buying heavier needles)?  I think I broke about four doing that skirt.  If you know of any, please, do tell!

I did this with different shorts and made mini-skirts from them!  I don't like shorts but love skirts!

Great idea for the jeans.  Thanks for sharing.
