i had a cute old typewriter that didn't advance, and when i tired of typing each line backwards, loverman and i decided to take all the guts out and make it into a planter. BUT, who knew the guts would live again as a hula dancing robot?

the empty typewriter did get made into a planter, but there's nothing growing in it right now.

Heheh, I love that.  Makes me wish I had an old typewriter just to rip it apart.

thanks for the compliments, folks. typewriters are fun!

craftylea, the backing is corrugated cardboard covered with nice paper. the face plate was glued on, and the heavier parts are wired through the cardboard, twist-tie style. the legs are wired directly to the skirt, and the arms are attached to the torso only.

i'm really curious as to whether all typewriters have a metal plate in the shape of a robot head.

that is very neat.  the letter spokes lend themselves very well to a skirt.  which gives me an idea... letters on the ends of pleats.  aha!

That is so creative and cute, but I was wondering, when you were gutting the typewriter, how did you happen to find the "inner hula robot?"

ah, muguet, 'twas a mystical turn of luck, indeed.

we didn't realize that the letter keys were part of a giant unit-- the original plan was to use them individually. we pretty much just played with the key-unit and determined that it looked like a hat, a skirt, a wink, jellyfish legs, and so on. the discovery of the little plate we used for the face was what clinched the hula-robot over the other possibilities.
