eunny jang's print o' the wave stole
«
on:
February 05, 2006 07:49:53 PM »
hey everyone!
my sister is getting married this summer, and i wanted to do something special for her, so i'm going to make eunny's print o' the wave shawl -
http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2005/12/print_o_the_wave_stole.html
- and i figured that i'd see if there was anyone else that wanted to work on it with me!
i'm doing the lace weight version, as i haven't done a lot of lace knitting and frankly, the cobweb weight frightens me. i've just ordered alpaca cloud in horizon -
http://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/itemid_5420108/yarn_display.aspx
, and can't wait to get started!

I plan on doing this stole some time this year, but not within the next few months, as I need to get some Mother's Day stuff out of the way first.

the yarn for this came in the mail today, it is so beautiful and soft and light and yum. so i immediately made a yarn ball (which went well until crazy tangling at the end. i need a swift). that ball of 440 yards fits in the palm of my hand, slightly bigger than a tennis ball. i may have coo-ed at it.
i love it. i probably won't get a chance to really start until march, but i am so excited.
the picture is a bit dark, the yarn is a tad lighter than that.

an update on my progress, if anyone is interested:
i grafted together the two centre panels yesterday, finally, and am quite pleased despite some early hiccups in the lace pattern, on my part.
here it is, stretched out along the back of my sofa:
and in for the closeup:

Oooh, I didn't know there was a knit-along for this! Yours looks so beautiful!!! I have been itching to try this pattern, and that yarn. How hard is the lace? I want to add sleeves to mine when I knit this. I think that would look great. What color are you using? How is the yarn? How many skeins did it take? Any other info? lol. Sorry to bug ya with all the questions!

Karenie - Your progress really does look great. I'm thinking about making this my next project too, after I get a couple of things off the needles. I'll also use Knitpicks Alpaca Cloud in Iris, which is lovely. I'll be checking back on your progress, and if I really do get started soon, I'll let you know.

cnp, i'd be interested in seeing how you do sleeves, it's an intriguing thought.
the yarn is horizon, so it's a soft blue with green and purple hints in it. i really like it, it has a bit of loft which is nice. and so incredibly soft. i just switched to the 2nd skein to finish the centre panel, so two is certainly all that i will need. gotta love that.
the lace isn't hard, once you get going. it takes me about an hour to work through a pattern repeat, so that's about 5 minutes across the needle once, since it's a 12 row repeat.
i'd love to see what you come up with, if you do start.
i'm glad i've generated some movement on this thread, it really is a lovely pattern.

That looks beautiful! I love the color, and your stitching is so pretty. I kind of like it with the thicker yarn anyway. I can't wait to see the final.
I cast on for this a few months ago, and got like 8 repeats done. Since the pattern says "repeat pattern 24 times" or whatever, I was like, oh, I'm getitng close! Then I read on and it was like "then cast on again and do another 24 repeats and graft" and was sad. I wasn't close at all.
I'm considering not grafting in the middle, and just knitting all the way through. Would that work? I feel like the graft is more distracting than the difference in pattern direction on the ends would be.

it wouldn't *not* work, exactly, but you wouldn't end up with something symmetrical, so i suppose it is totally up to you.
yeah, i think it's 17 repeats per side, so that is 34 in the centre panel. and i know that at the beginning i ripped back a couple of times (i cannot stress the importance of lifelines in lace enough, here), i figure that to this point i've spent about 40ish hours on it.
and i used to wonder why good lace was so expensive. heh.
