can't... stop... crafting...

I usually miss the craft challenges, so I was very happy to see this one in time to participate! I immediately knew that I wouldn't be able to make a doll, because I tend to get carried away and there was no way I'd finish in time. What to do?? Well, I've always wanted to make a paper doll of myself and this was just the motivation I needed [as well as the stipulation that I would only be allowed to watch my 'Corpse Bride' DVD if I finished my craft project Cheesy].

Sample pictures first, explanation after. You can check out my Flickr photstream to view all the images - 27 in total - at a larger size.:

I took 4 days to develop the concept [30 Year Retrospective of Crimes Against Fasion I am Guilty of Committing] and final doll base to use. In order to limit my craziness, I decided to only draw 1 outfit to represent every year. QUITE the challenge! Clothing is such an important part of my life - and always had been - that when I think back to a certain time of my life, I remember what I was wearing first and then the other memories slip into place around that. 1996 and 1997 were especially difficult to only choose 1 look for Smiley The clothes were drawn out, traced and inked and then coloured with pencils - no photoshop colouring! Then the drawings were scanned and I assembled the final images using PS. I also included photos wherever possible. As the background to every page I included a recap of the year's important events and the key items of clothing that I wore.

This was a lot of work and a lot of fun! Thank you, Craftster, for giving me the opportunity and inspiration to complete this gift to myself and to be an active member of this community  Grin

Thank you for looking  Cheesy

Thanks, vexy! I did all the years from 1976-2006. If you click the link to my Flickr photostream, you can see them all there Smiley

And thank you, too, to every one else for the enthusiastic comments!

i just finished looking at every year of your life (weird!) and i have to say that this project is absolutely breathtaking. the creativity, artistry and care come together in such a unique, fun and interesting way. this is more art than craft, i would have to say. my favorite part is the use of text in the background in such a way that it could only really be read/understood by you and not by anyone else. a wonderful reminder of events and emotions in your life for years down the road when all of the little things can be forgotten. you've completely inspired me to take up a project like this of my own. definitely not in the same style- i am nowhere near your skill in stylized drawing and illustration- but in the same idea. a panel for each year of my life documenting my outsides and my insides. bravo.

Thank you, everybody! I'm glad that this has inspired some of you to take the same [sometimes painful] walk down memory lane  Grin I thoroughly recommend it. And alysaurus, I'm so happy that you understood the full idea that I was trying to achieve. It's always deeply satisfying when someone else notices the little things.
