the material is a felted wool sweater embellished with needlefelted wool, crocheted piping, and lined with recycled sari fabric.  it's mostly hand-stitched and took hours, partly because i'm new to making bags and partly because i just couldn't stop decorating it!  it was really satisfying, especially since i spent $2 on materials- plus it's 100% recycled.  even the thread.

Gorgeous. I have plans to make felted bags out of two sweaters I have - embroidery like yours is beyond me though (they'll be lucky to get a bit of blanket stitch!)

thanks eveyone.  it's actually not embroidery- it's needlefelting.  so i just attatched the green wool yarn using a felting needle- very easy. 

and here it is with the flap i added (with recycled glass button:
