So, I dyed some cotton yarn purty colors (post found here - its really boring...don't go....its only here for reference!)
I had no clue what I was gonna do with it until I ran across this really cute and simple dobby hat pattern.  I didn't exactly follow it, but it was helpful to not have to work the math bits for myself. Thicker yarn, bigger needles, my own take on decreasing and voila:

I love any hat that gives me the kitty ear look from the front!!

here's the back view with the cute tail.

Since I decided to share Dobby with the world, I decided to share some other hats too.
Enter Knitty's Tychus, found in many, many posts here on Craftster.

my helpful mum modeling tychus (she says the colorway makes her think of stained glass).

tychus' back with the braided tail I added.

I'm an obsessive Browncoat, so a Jayne Cobb hat was a necessary knit, but my brother is a bigger Jayne fan than me, so the most cunning hat in the world goes to him.

I did this one awhile ago, I don't remember what pattern I used.....

So, whaddya think?

I love the vibrant colours of the dobby hat. They really work for it. Adorable!

Your Tychus is lovely.  What yarns did you use?

thank you, thank you  Smiley

the tychus is done in plain old boring black Red Heart Super Saver and what should be Caron Simply Soft in what I think is called "embroidery print".
I lost the labels and I get paisley print and embroidery print mixed up in my head - I think embroidery is the one I used, all rainbow colors, and paisley is a cool tone yarn, mostly purples with blues and greens, but I could have them backwards, sorry.  I know its one or the other.

God, I love that stripy yarn for the Tychus. Your mum's right on, it reminds me of stained glass too. And, oddly enough, jolly ranchers.

Cool hats. I especially like the Tychus - does indeed look like stained glass.

I did the same thing with Tychus that you did - used 4 repeats instead of 5.   I hit the gauge on that one, but found that 5 repeats would've made for one huuuge hat.

its good to know I wasn't the only one who found the tychus pattern a little wonky.  I don't often check gauge (yeah, I'm lazy) but I finished with the fourth section and realized if I continued the hat would be GIGANTIC - I compared my gauge with the pattern and it was perfect.....I'm just writing it off as one of those weird little unexplained mysteries  Huh

oh dear god, complete strangers think my mother is right - I think its best not to encourage the parental units too much... Tongue

I wouldn't worry too much - I'm sure I'm much closer to your mom's age than yours so it really doesn't count - haha Wink

All of them are sooo fabulous! You really have an eye for color combinations.
And thank you for the link to the Dobby hat.
