Oh my goodness, I had to come out of craftster retirement to say that I'm in love with your Aladdin Sane sock monkey.  And I definitely second the motion for sock Monkees.  Rock on!!!

more ideas:

the white stripes (it'd be kinda funny if you just used red and white striped socks and called them jack and meg)
groucho marx or harpo!

okay, you have inspired me as well! funny thing, i just found red and white striped little girl tights at the thrift store to use (i've decided i like them made out of tights, they're ganglier) and i will call them jack and meg! maybe i'll make a little felt guitar and cardboard drum kit for them!

To the poeple that suggested RHPS and Freddie Mercury, I love you. I think a Freddie Mercury monkey would be sweet...

I'm not a huge fan of this movie, but I know a lot of people are, so, Napoleon Dynamite?

Or....

- Pikachu (or any pokemon, haha)
- Darth Vader
- Kermit the Frog, erm Monkey? or any muppet
- Gumby or Pokey Monkey?

I don't know how any of these would work as sock monkeys, because I've only ever made one, and that was with a TON of help from my friends...

I have been inspired to make rock stars galore...

What if you made The Monkees monkeys... as in "hey hey we're the monkees"
Davey Havok
Billy Corgan
The Dresden Dolls
Boy George

....have I gone overboard with the suggestions?

Great monkeys! I think maybe the mismatched socks we have around here might make good monkeys.

For hair, another idea is to sew 100 % wool yarn to the head. If you run it through the washing machine on a hot water cycle (just do a load of laundry) before you stuff it, it felts and makes wonderful dreadlocks.

What a fantastic idea....I was thinking of making some hippy monkeys...maybe a bob marley...
