I fell in love with a bag at the mall but it was too small for me and well it was pretty expensive, like car payment expensive. So I made my own. The fabric came from Walmart's $2 a yard pile and everything else was scrap fabric I had. I even got to use a piece of vintage kimono I was saving(the red and black flower print).
So all together it cost me a whole $2!

The front pocket has a magnetic snap closure, I amazingly had one:

Great bag and cute pocket on the outer flap! Congrats to you on resisting buying a terribly expensive bag! Each time I start to purchase a really expensive bag, I think... well, I could make my own and then use the money to buy shoes! (Great philosophy! Love DSW!)
