 seaofstars, I adore you!!!!  This is a great tute!  I just tried my first taste of applique & had my mom walk me through it, but this makes sooo much more sense.  & its here to come back to when I need a refresher.  Thanks so much.

I have appliqued before, but I did it a little differently without the wonder-under. I keep hearing great things about it, so I gave this method a try. I am really having problems, the glue (or whatever that is on the wonderunder,) is gunking up my machine, I only get about 10 stitches and then I have to stop, take out my needle, clean it off, rethread, and start again. It really sucks! If I don't it makes my machine skip stitches and breaks the thread eventually.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is there something I'm not doing right? I know this is a pretty old thread, but I wasn't sure where else to ask this. I really want to be able to applique this way, it saves me a few steps from my other method, and it saves a bit on material too. Any help is greatly appreciated!

This is exactly how i do my applique-ing too, except i dont use wonder-under. It gunks up my needle, too...

You dont. You just lay it ontop of what youre sewing it onto and you applique it on. Its not hard, you really dont need anything to stick it on with.

Ooo! I've always wanted to try my hand at appliques. This is a really great tutorial! I can't wait to try it.

One question... the wonder under stuff, i've never heard of it but by everyones posts it seems it's not neccessary, right?  but that stitch n tear stuff is like a stablizer for appliques? I accidently bought some of it the other day (i thought it was interfacing when i bought it and figured out it wasn't when i got it home and tried to iron it on to some fabric and it didn't stick! haha silly me  ) From the name of it I assume you just stick it under the applique while stitching it and then pull off the excess when you're done? Is that right?
