I just finished this messenger bag:

I knew exactly what i wanted it to look like and that included several things i've never done before.
Here is my first messenger bag (i made several small bags and purses)
with my first ever embroidery and my first attempt at piping.

cell phone pocket

w/ flap open

lining and inside pocket

It's going to be a birthday present for a friend. I hope she likes it!

I'm really happy with it and i think i'll make another one for myself.

What do you think?

I love all the pockets especially. I also like the flashy lining. I think the piping is a nice touch, I need to use it in my bags more..Is that the lotus from Sublime stitching?

I'm not quite sure how long it took, because i didn't make it all in one session. And i keep losing track of time while im sewing Wink. My guess would be 10 - 15 hours.

I agree with Zephyr!  Very well made and very professional.  The lining is so beautiful...where did you find it?
I saw it at IKEA and just had to buy it. It frayed terribly and was really a pain to work with.

Yes, i wanted to do the dragon first but i decided, that it would be a little hard for a first try.

I bought some of that fabric from Ikea too, its so pretty & soft, I agree tho, such a pain in the butt to work with!! Beautiful job on the bag, I'm tempted to fight with the left over fabric I have and attempt to make another bag Smiley

Thanks! I can't wait to give it to my friends after all the wonderfull feedback i got from you.

This looks really nice! Do you have a close up pic of your slit pockets? I did one on my bag yesterday and it didn't come out as nicely as yours. Just wondering what your trick was if you wouldn't mind sharing?

The pictures i took are pretty fuzzy, so i can't post a clear close up of the pockets. I'm going to make some kind of tutorial for slit pockets. But this might take some days.

SLIT POCKET TUTORIAL

Mark place and length of the pocket slit and cut the fabric as the red lines show. (The length of the slit is the blue line)

Cut 2 pieces of fabric: about 2cm longer than your slit and 2cm wide.(further referred to as "slit pieces")  Fold in center.

Align center line of each "slit piece" with a blue line in first picture. Open sides facing each other. Sew through all layers along blue line.

Fold "slit pieces" through the slit. Consequently the closed sides now face each other.
This is what it should look like from the inside:

Outside view:

Fold forward along dotted line.

You should see the little triangle and parts of the "slit pieces" hanging over to the right.
Sew them together along the blue line.

repeat on the other end

You probably want to have a pocket behind that slit.
When you attach it, sew along the blue line.

If you want to add a zipper remember to do that before you attach the pocket.

I suggest you try this on some leftover fabric as you go through this tutorial. Some parts are hard to explain if you don't see them.

Tell me if there are any questions.

I'll try to take some pics next time I make a slit pocket that is not black on black.

EDIT:
You can also make pockets with only one "slit piece" that coveres the whole slit:

the slit piece should then be at least 3cm wide.

they make perfect cell phone pockets!!
