I have a breakup mixed cd somewhere.... but I haven't had to listen to it in 2 1/2 years!  A few that come to mind-

"Forget Her" -Jeff Buckley (sad, very emotional, and his voice is killer)

"Sometimes It Hurts" (or almost any song off the Darkest Days album) -Stabbing Westward

"The Jeep Song" -The Dresden Dolls (Upbeat and funny song about seeing an ex bf's jeep everywhere)

Laisse Tomber les Filles by Fabienne Delsol or the English version, Chick Habit by April March.  It's more of a "f**k you for breaking my heart, someday you'll suffer" kinda song, but it's really catchy and kinda girl-power-y, which might be some comfort.

I just made a breakup mix for my 17-year old cousin, who just went through her first breakup. And you know that when you're 17, all emotions are ten times stronger and life seems so futile.

Here are a few of the songs (sorry if I repeat songs that were already mentioned):

99 Problems - Jay-Z
You oughta know -Alanis Morissette (I'm surprised no one has mentioned this)
Pieces don't fit anymore - James Morrison (it might reduce you to tears)
Bye Bye Bye - N'Sync (good for a laugh, which she might need!)
Undone (Sweater Song)- Weezer
Good Fucking Bye - Alkaline Trio
You Got Lucky - Tom Petty
Ex-Factor - Lauryn Hill
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
Separate Ways - Journey
For No one - The Beatles
and of course, November Rain - Guns N Roses

"Insensitive" by Jann Arden

Wow, I haven't had to think about that song in quite some time, but thinking about it brought the memories flooding back.

"Operator" by Jim Crocce (sp?)  It's got some really pretty guitar, even if it's a little on the cheesy side.  Another more empowerment-centered one would be "Lollypop" by Mika.  It's upbeat while just telling you to live self-sufficiantly, not needing love, and you'll be happier in the long run.  Plus it's fun to dance to...

This subject is near to my heart, since I rarely celebrate Valentine's day. This year I am lucky enough to have someone to celebrate with, but I can count on 1 hand the number of times that's been the case.

I second Alanis - the whole "Jagged Little Pill" album is good for the anger stage of a breakup, as is the "whatever & Ever Amen" album by Ben Folds Five, one song of which has been named. Maroon 5's "Songs About Jane" has some good f--- you songs.

In addition to "I am the Highway," I recommend Audioslave's "Moth" and "What You Are."

Also second Go Your Own Way, along with Dreams and The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.

Blondie - Heart of Glass

I will Survive - any version, but I like Cake's

Fall Out Boy - Chicago is So 2 Years Ago, I Slept with Someone in Fallout Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song, My Heart is the Worst Kind of Weapon, Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying, The Pros & Cons of Breathing, Thks fr th Mmrs

Tom Petty - Don't Do Me Like That, Don't Come Around Here No More, I Need to Know, others

Songs when you are sad/in mourning:
Duncan Shiek - Barely Breathing
Pete Yorn - Ever Fallen In Love
Jewel - Foolish Games
Crowded House - Walking on the Spot
Better Than Ezra - Porcelain, Good
Third Eye Blind - How's It Gonna Be

Recovery/Over it songs

Journey - Someday Love will Find You
Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
Death Cab for Cutie - Someday You Will Be Loved
Pete Townsend - Let My Love Open the Door
Squeeze - Black Coffee in Bed
Steely Dan - Any Major Dude Will Tell You
Sublime - What I Got
U2 - Beautiful Day
Wallflowers - All Things New Again, How Far You've Come

Oh yeah, and "Love Stinks" by the J. Geils band.  Grin

I was rediscovering my iPod today and decided that I Always Knew by Tilly and the Wall would count here.  It's more of a "we grew appart" song, so it's not negative at all, just reflective.  Plus it involves tap dancing.
