i went through the official craftster list of all the bags/purses tutorials and i got inspired to make my own!
i remade my mom's old skirt into a little green bag
so here goes! i'd love feedback, let me know if its too confusing
step 1- so i started with cutting off the top banding/belt part. since it was straight and pressed already i decided to use it as a heavy duty strap, that goes all the way around the bag(this is what inspired me). after i tore the seams off of the banding to get it off the skirt i re-sewed it to make the strap. double stitch if desired
step 2- since the banding had a button at one and a buttonhole at the other, i connected them to make a loop. this loop will now guide me in all my measurements of my pieces. made from scratch bags don't need buttons, but just sewed together i guess. trace the loop on your fabric twice, so when you cut them out you have 2 ovals.
then cut off the top of one
of the ovals. this determines the size of your flap, so its up to you!
step 3- measure the round part of the oval you have just cut. this will determine the length of the bottom part (is it called a gusset?). when you have this measurement, trace out a straight line on your fabric, as thick as you want the gusset to be (keeping in mind that the strap will go overtop) and then cut it out
step 4- right sides in, (you cant tell with my fabric too much because of the lighting.) sew the gusset (i wish i was right about this word!!) to both parts, this part will shape the outside layer of the bag.
i don't have a picture, but it's supposed to look like a very unfinished bag.
step 5- cut out 2 ovals and a gusset with the same dimensions as your outside fabric , out of lining fabric. sew it just like you did with the outer fabric, but leave a hole at the centre bottom of the lining. you will pull the whole bag out of there eventually, so keep in mind in case you interphased your outer/lining fabric.
step 6- right sides together, put the outer fabric INSIDE the lining. sew all the way around the top edges (around top flap, sides, front of bag). when this is done, pull out your bag through the hole you left before in the lining. stitch again around the outside once you have stiched your hole together. COMIN TOGETHER AINT SHE :d:d
step 7- now attach your strap. sew all the way around.
**step 8- now decorate! .. i covered some buttons to go with the purse.
this was fun!
thanks for looking!!
