as a librarian and a drinker, i am both gladdened and somewhat appalled...but mostly gladdened.
so they are essentially just stacked, not glued or bolted?  and you feel secure about this?  i'm not sure i've got a good handle on the "threaded paper" element...and maybe your friends are more restrained than mine, but i see drunken stumbling to the bar as a possible hazard.
in any case, that is fabulous, no doubt about it.

I think I'm all gladdened by this.  My only problem would be the hours I would put into reading each book to make sure it couldn't be used in any other way.

I'm not a drinker at all, but that bar is fabulous! It makes me wonder about the other kind of furniture I could possibly make out of books. Thanks for the inspiration!

I'll drink to that!  I mean those books could've had a much worse fate...and we'll assume they're all just bad self help books. Grin

A bit of a fire hazard, but a cool concept!  Lets just hope they don't smoke.

how did you manage to obtain 700 library books, though? massive late fees?

The linked to site states:
"One of our non-Vestal housemates worked at the Stanford library, and his job included the task of throwing away old books, which apparently the other librarians couldn't bear to do. We decided to rescue these books from that awful fate - and what better use for them than a bar from which to entertain our frequent guests?"

...it shows pictures of the guys dumpster-diving the books out of a trash filled dumpster...

and it states at the bottom: "In any case, the books were not damaged at all in construction (except for the ones we surfaced the countertop with), as we didn't use any fasteners. We threaded sheets of paper between books but used no glue. So if anyone discovers there's a desperate shortage of journals on endocrinology and virology, drop us a line."

So... the books were rescued from the trash, given a new life, and they're not exactly the type of books you'd want to cozy up next to the fireplace to read anyways. Smiley
