You can add an advertisement on Craigslist under the general link under the selling section.  Just pick your location first.

These are wonderful tips!  I just listed my first 3 items on Etsy last night

I saw one or two people mention article-writing, and I wanted to suggest trying out Associated Content.  I write (obviously) and I love AC -- and now that they've partnered with Yahoo! the exposure is even greater.  Write tutorials, free patterns, opinion pieces, etc.  You can also post audio and video articles on there.

(Twitter is also great -- I use it to promote my articles and it has been a wonderful boon.)

I'm re-opening my etsy shop soon and needed a refresher to get back into the swing of things.

I'm a big fan of doing blog give-aways, I like to include little freebies (like keychains and such with my shop address/name on them) and definitely business cards as well as Thank You postcards that occasionally include specials like free shipping etc.

I've found that word of mouth has been my biggest help towards sales. I tell everyone what I do when I get the chance, and even leave business cards behind at restaurants if I get a waiter/waitress that I think will dig my stuff.

I have yet to make a Facebook Fan page thought I'm thinking about it. Anyone who's done it, how do you like it? Do you think it helps?

I've never heard of free ad space in the news paper, but you could also advertise on Craigslist <3

I like to try and promo my site in fun ways.  I've been participating in craft and blog swaps which is fun.  So fun I'm hoping hold one of my own next month!

Tip: it is not about HOW MANY media you use to advertise/promote.
It is about HOW WELL you use the few you chose to use!

Successful selling your handmade products on Etsy is about:
- Making uniqe products of excellent quality.
- Having talent.
- Presenting your work in the best possible way (stunning pictures, etc.).
- Having excellent customer service.
- And in general: putting in a lot of hard work, love an dedication!
THEN comes the marketing/promoting. To whom? To your target market!
(Not just to 'everyone you know on Facebook'.)

My shop is doing well. My sales are at my target level, considering my chronic health problems. Beyond this point it would become too much to handle for me.
YET I don't do Facebook, Twitter, blogging, pinboards, nor paid advertising.
Don't let anybody tell you it cannot be done without those venues!
Most of them can be compaired to shouting into outer space.

Find your target market! Let them know about your products!
And do so in a polite and friendly way, not by pushing it into their faces.

Don't do what everybody else does! Everybody else is already there doing it...
