My sons backpack fell apart. so did his pants. He wanted a sewing lesson, so we took the pants, a zipper, and the straps from the backpack and made a whole new backpak! He did all the sewing that was just straight lines, and he got to show off at school. Very cool. He wanted to post and show off. Smiley
Now he wants to make a quilt! :0 he already started on it, and even did a rustic applique!!

Big shout-out to you and Riley.  The backpack looks very professional.  And using recycled pants is very cool.

I have an 8 year old son interested in sewing.  I let him push the peddle while I guide the fabric.  "Ok, go....slowly now...and....stop.. .STOP!  STOP!  STOP!  Ok, that wasn't too bad."

Awesome job! I did a quilting project once with a lindergarten class. They colored on thier fabric squares and then got to stand on the pedal while I ran the fabric through to piece it together. Needless to say... I was putting my life in my own hands!

STOP STOP STOP!!!!!That is so funny. That is exactly how it went. I also have a 6 year old, and he really enjoyed the sewing. It was like a little home ec class in here this weekend. Good thing I have so many machines everywhere! My six year old made a bib for the baby! I don't have a picture yet because it is already dirty! Smiley

GREAT JOB RILEY!

you let them both sew on your machine??  I am planning on buying a little machine from hsn--not too fast for my five year old...she likes to push the gas hard on my machine and want her to have something of her own to screw up...LOL

the one time I let her push the pedal on my machine I was telling her...slow down...no slow down NOW!! argh! I would just buy a secondhand machine, but don't want her to hurt herself!

Grin You all are making Riley feel so good! He did have help you know, so I will accept the compliments as well...  Roll Eyes

I let them both sew on my machines. I am crazy. I only allow it with lots of supervision though. And one of the machines I thought was old and junky and had avoided it for years. I kept it in a box in the basement. I got it out so they could both sew at the same time. I actually like it better than the one I have been using in its place. And it wasn't broken... I just didn't know anything when it went screwy. It just needed cleaning, and thread tension readjustment! The boys are getting better and better as the days go by, and I am not mortified when I see them sit down to the sewing machine anymore. I think the quilt has been abandoned though! Smiley HA hA HA such lofty ideas we have when we first start crafting!!!

I remember when I was little, I had got a toy sewing machine for Christmas...I don't think I ever made anything on it, but I sure sewed together lots of scraps! One day my brother was supposed to be laying down for a nap, and we heard the machine running...mom went upstairs to find him sitting on the floor sewing his lil heart out. It makes me laugh to think about it! You talking about your little ones sewing just made me think of it. That's so awesome that you let them use your machines though...the crafty stuff really does stick with you. I don't have the same passions my mother has when it comes to crafting, but I have passion about other crafts but I don't know that I would have thought of crafting the way I do had she not shared so much with me growing up....

HA HA HA!!!!!!! I will have to have him make another! it was pretty easy actually! Maybe he and I can make one this weekend! Smiley I am going to go check the zipper collection! (We'll see if he will be up to it, finicky finicky kids I tell ya!) I will do a tutorial all alone if he won't help, but it would be so fun to do it with him! I bet he will do it, he is a sucker for positive attention!  Cheesy If he won't do it, I am SURE his 6 year old brother will.

Great job Riley & Mum!!  I bet Riley is so proud of his work!!  As he should - what a project to tackle!!!

Echoing everyone's comments about raising crafty boys!!!  I'm teaching my 6 year old son to sew - he sewed two pillowcases, one for him and one for his little brother.  He's sooooooo proud of it.

He did an awesome job! My mom sewed when I was little, and if I was in the position your son is in (i.e. I made something and my mom posted it online and told me how everyone was impressed with it) I would have thought that was the coolest thing ever.

And one of the machines I thought was old and junky and had avoided it for years.

The machine I use is my mom's old one, and today she had to sit and think about whether or not it's older than me! (I'm almost 22, and she decided the machine is somewhere around 15-20.) I definitely know what you mean about not knowing how to fix it when things go wrong. I'm still a baby sewer, and whenever anything happens with that machine, I try and get more and more frustrated, and end up calling my mommy. The funny thing is that I swear she doesn't even really DO anything to it, she just looks at it and it works. I don't get it. I guess the machine knows she means business.

This post brought back all sorts of good memories about my mom teaching me to sew!
