I made these pocket warmers for my very brave best friend who walks to work every day, rain/snow or shine.

They're little knitted wallets, and inside are little cotton pillows filled with rice and something that smells nice.

This one is rice and cloves:

And this one is rice and lavender:

You just heat up the cotton pillows in the microwave for 30 seconds, put them in the wallets, and away you go!  I got the idea from knitty's pocket creatures:

I used basmati rice but I would only suggest this kind if you actually like the way it smells (it's pretty noticeable after being heated). I also sectioned the little pillows into four compartments so that all the filling wouldn't clump at the bottom.

Those are really cute, I may have to steal the idea from you. I have to walk every where due to lack of a car and a preference for walking than the public transit here. Those are really cute, your friend will love them!

What a thoughtful and wonderful gift. No need for them where I live now, but I sure would have loved something like this when I lived in Chicago!

Those look great!  As a fellow "walks-to-worker," I have to say that's a very thoughtful gift.

This is a really excellent idea. I especially like the additional step of dividing the rice into compartments. They look awesome and I like the fairisle pattern.

There will always be people who say mean words  because you are different, and sometimes their minds cannot be changed. There are many more people who do not judge others based on how they look or where they are from. THOSE are the people whose WORDS truly matter.
