Sorry for the **totally** newbie question, but I got my new Louet S10 spinning wheel, and the flyer isn't turning.  I've tried adjusting the brake band, and admittedly I have spun about 50yds of yarn on it, but when I don't have yarn in the wheel (just treadling), the flyer doesn't move.
Is this normal?  Am I doing something wrong?
Or am I just crazy?

I don't have one, but I believe Louets are bobbin driven wheels with the brake on the flyer (as opposed to many other wheels like Ashfords and Kromskis which I have). So when there's no tension then the flyer stops so the yarn can wind on, opposite of my wheel in which the bobbin stops so the yarn can wind on. If the flyer is not moving at all even when you're spinning, then the brake band might be too taut.

I have a Louet S51 and it is bobbin led so the flyer only starts flying once you start spinning with yarn on the hooks if that makes sense?  I can't think how to explain it technically.    It doesn't move if I just treadle with nothing going through the orifice onto the hooks.  Try it and see what happens.

hellow.mango you're right!  I had thought that the flyer should be turning even without yarn (the instructor in the spinning class had a flyer-driven lendrum), but forgot that it doesn't work that way with bobbin-driven!
I'm hoping to go to a local spinning guild meeting later this month, so I'll have lots of experienced people to guide me in person!
Thanks quatzical and hello.mango!

Glad I could help...I was worried that my reply was incomprehensible!
