Maybe you guys will get some ideas from my experience:

I made one of these for my friend before she went off to college.  I bought a cheap cork bulliten board and staples the fabric around the pre-existing edge.  After I stapled the robbin in place I put some ...cord I guess, around the edge to cover the staples.  For the pins, I bought regular thumb tacks, the push pin kind, and some cute buttons.  I cut the U shaped part on the back of the button with a wire cutter and hot glued the button onto the flat part of the thing tack.  When you're standing in front of the board, all you see is the button!
I used plywood cause my dad has so much lying around. My friend used a bulletin board, but it cost her 8 bucks. That is a great idea about the button backs. Those shanks get in the way when I try to glue them to the tacks!

Hey, wouldn't styrofoam work? Great for putting tacks in and then you wouldn't need any batting...

I was thinking of making one without the ribbons - just a styrofoam square covered in some nice fabric - for a nicer-looking message board.

awesome idea! I've also thought about making the board into a different shape besides square/rectangular. Like maybe an "L" shape or a star shape next time?

You know what might look neat? Cutting the board into a name or initals of the person you were gifting to.

Also, foam core board works well for this and super cheap and light.

I did this .. kinda.. at the beginning of the year (this was my first year in college). I used cardboard though but did like you said..just covered it in fabric and folded it over a bit in the back and then stitched through about 3 inches diagonally from each corner with a little button on it.. it turned out really cute, and was awesome as a bulletin board.

oh my G--!  that fairy one is absolutey adorable!!! Smiley

I have seen similiar instructions a thousand times, but I've never had the motivation to make one, until now.  I think I will make one for my dormroom next year (actually, our dorms have handy dandy tack boards and i already have a super cute cloud one, but this is such a cute idea, how can I resist?).

...and the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the flower was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
