Rapunzel Scarf with Hand Spun Yarn
«
on:
January 09, 2006 10:40:18 AM »
I was inspired to try making a rapunzel scarf after reading this thread here:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=67366.0
I'm posting this in the Spinning category because the yarn I used was hand spun. I didn't spin it myself though. I bought it at the BUST craft fair from the super talented Heidi of
MyPaperCrane.com
. I
looooove
her yarn! Well, I love everything she does! This yarn that I bought from her had all kinds of crazy things spun into it like pom pom fringe, sequins, sliver thread, rick rack... I was so afraid to use it because I didn't think I could do it justice! But then I heard about the Rapunzel scarf idea. (thanks Alison for telling me about this!)
Here's what the yarn looked like before:
I cut the hand spun yarn into 15 pieces each 10 feet in length. Then I cut 5 pieces each of 3 colors of some plain, brightly colored yarn. I separated the yarn into three bunches. Each section had 5 pieces of the hand spun yarn and 5 pieces of plain colored yarn. Then I just braided the three sections and tied knots at the end! It was so easy. It took about an hour but I bet the next one I make will go much quicker.

That yarn is lovely and it looks great in the scarf that you made. I think that handspun yarn sometimes looks better not knitted but maybe woven or as in this case, plaited.
Delicious! Especially the blue pompoms.

The yarn is soooo pretty and the plaiting idea is a really nice one - simple, but effective!! *bows down to the crafting goddess*

Wow! that came out really nice!!
I love how the pom pom section ended up right in the middle of the scarf so it sits under your chin!!
Im going to have to keep this project in mind for my handspuns that are too short to crochet with!
thanks for sharing!

What a great way to showcase Heidi's yarn. I'm an addict, too. Working on a lil project for my first Craftster post, made from 4 skeins of her yumminess.

I'm not a knitter/crocheter (maybe some day!), but am I right in thinking that, someday, you might be able to take this apart and use the pieces for another project?.....it might be like walking around with your inspiration (colors and textures) wrapped around your neck?

I'm a beginner knitter but I think that since all the yarn is cut into 10-foot pieces, you'd have to tie them end to end to use them in a knitting/crochet project. I bet that would be fine though because it's essentially what you do with you switch colors of yarn as you're are knitting but you'd just be doing it more often. It just might be a bit tricky to hide all of the knots.
