I just sorted through the patterns in the Knitting Pattern a Day Calendar (I hate waiting...) and found a pattern that is so similar to Clapotis.  It is Wed Aug 2, 2006 if you have this!  The pattern is just that you knit a rectangle and then when you cast off, you drop every third stitch.  It looks so close to clapotis, but I wanted a second opinion!

the clapotis is knit on a bias, so it's not a rectangle, it's a big parallelogram.  I haven't seen the poncho, but I'm sure that for difficulty, the Clap is higher, and it makes a very visually interesting finished product.
