mgenevieve made a really awesome bag and tutorial here http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=49030.0 that I loved, and since I am so incredibly bored and thus crafty, I tried it out.
I ended up with a super nifty bag that is rather grandma-esque (which is gold-star good, in my books.)

The only changes I made to mgenevieve's pattern were the size, the lining and inside pocket. I also added some jazzy stitching all over, and some ribbon on the strap.

I'll be adding a zipper (you can see the pre-zipper flappies in the pics), as soon as I can get my lazy tush down to walmart.

This baby's coming with me on my first day of school, which is on MONDAY. Cripes.

I loves my new bag...

I like the stitching all over, nice touch.

Did you pleat the lining too? Looks like it. When I give the pattern a try I will be doing a lining too. Oh and did you do any interfacing or do you think that would make it too stiff? I've not worked with pleats much so I'm not even sure if interfacing would be pleated or cut to the finished size.  Tongue

yep! the lining is lined, and nope I didn't use interfacing. But if i were to use this pattern again, I would probably use heavier material, so that it would be a BIT sturdier.
I think it was 15" deep and 22" across (but don't quote me on that) BEFORE pleating. and the fabric was in the remnants bin at Walmart, of all places!! Glad you like!

I've since added some funky bits to decorate it, and a zipper. It's supah fantastic wonderful for carrying my note books etc.
