I made this Scrabble board art piece for a friend who likes Scrabble, but also loves leaving messages. It's actually not made with a board, but with scrapbooking papers that are Scrabble themed.

I used a sheet of stainless steel from the hardware store (cost: $6) (Chicago store, The Crafty Beaver! yay!) and some Scrabble scrapbooking pages from the JoAnn's (around $1/each). I put self-adhesive magnet sheets (about $12 total) on the back of the letters and cut them out.

Then I just double-sided taped the "board" sheet to the stainless steel and arranged the letters underneath. Luckily there are way more than "regulation" boards give you, so you can spell out lots of long messages.

I drilled a couple of holes in the top and strung some picture hanging wire through them for easy adjustment to get it level.

Now my friend (Craftymed) can write messages (she loves the red headed men hence the message in faux Scrabble style "I Love Red Men")

or just play a game of scrabble on the wall. Didn't even break the bank!

this is sooo cool! you should have games of scrabble that go on forever... just take a turn when you walk by. that would be fun! you did an awesome job, i bet your friend loved it to bits!  Smiley

I love that. I'm guessing you cut out the letters by hand. Was it really tedious? I have wanted to do something similar for my kids (learning to spell) and my hubby (freakishly loves scrabble even though he is terrible!) But I don't know if I have the patience to cut out all of those letters.

Thanks for all the praise! It turned out pretty cool.

Erzi_B, it actually didn't  take very long at all because the self-adhesive magnet stuff is so thin, you can cut it with regular scissors. I just cut out blocks of the letter paper, laid it on top, then cut it out in rows. I did all of them in about an hour.

being the recipient of this fantastic crafty project, i have to comment on how wonderful it is!! (thanks anne)

it's hanging in my living room, already covered in lots of papers i have to have posted around.

and it is really hard to stop at the board, add a word, and then walk away.  you just want to keep playing!!

i'll try to get some pictures up...as soon as i remember to charge the batteries for my camera.  maybe i need another note on the Scrabble board to remind me!
