Yay my last April block!  Only 2 days late.  It was a good way to use up tiny scraps in my scrap pile.

I started on the birdhouse block and I've never done paper piecing before and I'm not sure I'm doing it right because it seems super hard.  Are you supposed to lay the fabric against the side with the lines printed on it or the blank side?  And if you put it against the lines, how are you supposed to be able to see if you are sewing on the line or not?  If you put it on the blank side how do you make sure it is positioned correctly?  Is it important in paper piecing to cut the piece of fabric really close to the shape you are piecing it onto?  Sorry if the answers to these questions are obvious  Tongue

I've never paper-pieced before, either.  I found this tutorial helpful for getting the gist of it.

I am scared of paper piecing.  But I have been wanting to give it a try.  That practice paper piecing block is the one I wanted to use to make a quilt for my niece, but I had no idea that it was paper pieced!  Perhaps I need to find a different block.

The practice one is a pretty simple block - I'm certain you could piece it normally.  I think she chose it for the practice paper piecing just to use a simple example.

PS - Pibbgirl, so rude of me not to comment earlier.  I'm sorry.  I like your block a lot, the big swipe of orange gives a great contrast frame to the perpendicular strips beside it.  I also really like the dark blue fabric and the black and white print - I'm a sucker for neat fabrics.

quenstalof, I really like the colors you used in your star squares - especially the pink, it's so busy!

thanks Homerof2!

i didn't know what i'd be able to use it for, because it was so busy/bright, but it worked perfectly for that block

Thanks for posting that link crazy_bc_jen.  I guess I was doing it backwards (no wonder it was so hard!)

I have finished the May birdhouse quilt block (I won't say how many times I tried the other one before giving up.)

I have decided to totally abandon my previous ideas of using the colors they suggest and trying to carry forward a color from month to month.  I'm not happy with the squares I made for Jan, Feb and March and know I won't ever use them so I am going to re-do them to colors I like - it was a good idea, for a short time  Grin

So, here's my square in my own colors:

Homerof2-your birdhouses are lovely.  Great color choices!  I hope mine turn out that nicely.  I hope to get working on both the April and May blocks this weekend.
