I made a start on the toe-up versions (terrified of running out of yarn)
I laid it on another sock to show the length I'll need before starting the gusset increases (about 1"/2.5cm)
The yarn is Knit Picks Dye-your-own and I did - with KoolAid! I love the colours - they're even brighter in person.
The toe-up pattern is
here
(you still need the original though).

ooh I'm almost done with my first sock -
I'm doing it toe up, although not from those directions, as usual it didn't occur to me to see if someone else had figured it out before I tried

^ those look very different from the Jaywalker pattern. but they look great regardless!
heres a close up of the striping
so these socks were two firsts for me. they are my first complete pair and my first time dying self striping yarn. what an experience. winding a 9ft+ skein in a 1 bedroom nyc apt .... i should be detered from doing this again but im not. well this coming from the person who should be doing homework and sleeping but is instead knitting... anyways. i love how they came out. the first one made was a great fit. i made the first one for the most part with 00s but i lost the fifth. damn. so the subsquent second was made with 0s and are loose on my tiny feet.
i doubt that ill be wearing these outside anytime. i have a feeling that they will be rubbed raw and pill like a banshee within a day. and id really rather not be darning every night. does anyone have any suggestions for a heavy duty plain dyeable sock yarn?

yeah, like i said, stripey yarn would have been ideal -- i think my gauge was way off (as were my estimations about how many repeats of the pattern i needed to go around an ankle) and it just got all thrown off.
BUT THEY FIT!
it's like magic, i swears it. so yeah, since i used a solid/twist yarn, the socks just depend all on the texture and not really much to the yarn appeal.
this was a totally easy pattern to remember too, love it

Yay! I started! I'm about 3" down the leg of the first one. The pattern is so easy to remember that it's the perfect respite from lace I was hoping for. Using this yarn has made me understand the lure of DIY self-striping sock yarn. This yarn self-stripes, yes, but the contrasting stripes are each slightly longer than one round and the overall colourway is not one I would have picked. Still, it works well for a first pair of socks.
I'm making the larger size based on my foot measurements and several mentions of FO tightness I found in this thread and so far it looks like I'll have plenty of yarn to complete both. I'm wondering how long I can get away with making the legs....
