I got it in my head to try crocheting a turtle, though I don't know why, I'm not that into turtles.

Mel is a mutant because she has a pink shell and two tails. The pictures don't show it too well, but she has a sad look on her face. Her head is somewhat outsized (and how), but I decided with was appropriate in the end. Mel was made without a pattern, as is obvious.

I was thinking of doing something more extreme with her, but I don't want to let personal ambition outpace my abilities. This is only my second crochet animal. She's far from perfect, but as a paperweight (stuffed with polyfill and aquarium gravel), she functions fine. And maybe she'll cheer up with a purpose in life.

Ahem.

Aww, she sure is a cute mutant! She should be happy - sometimes it's good to be different  Smiley

Aw, Mel's so cute.  I love turtles, and now that I've seen Mel, I particularly like little mutant turtles with pink shells.  I thought about crocheting a turtle for the Etsy competition but abandoned that idea.  Think I'll have to go back to it now.

And by the way, she's beautiful even if she were your 40th attempt.  Great job.

Thanks!  Grin

I don't think I'll be reaching contest skill levels anytime soon, but I'm really enjoying the challenge of trying to work out how to crochet things without a pattern.

I adore Mel! She's absolutely adorable. Besides, she's not a mutant, everyone else is!

And if Mel ever needs to find a good home, you know there are many Craftsters out there who would cherish her.

Heehee. Well, I've got way more ideas for crochet mutants than my flat (and my boyfriend) can handle, so I'm sure there will come a time when some of my 'masterpieces' need to find a new home.
