Maybe you should start a thread asking people who have learned from a book, what they recommend. i learned from a book, but I was also in the third grade, so I don't really recall what I used or how. Further, I learned in a manner that would likely be dubbed "wrong" since my stitches always face the opposite direction they are supposed to. It doesn't bother me or hold me back, but it is a possible outcome when you learn on your own.
I always tell people who get frustrated with knitting that they should think back to the first time they used a computer mouse, and how odd that seemed. In time, we all acclimate. If you want to knit, definitely stick with it.

I can't believe you've never followed a pattern before. Was it painful? haha
