locking journal

i'm making a journal for my boyfriend for xmas and i have everything all planned out but how to make it lock. i have a little lock and key but i can't think of a creative yet easy way to make it so it locks and makes the journal locked.
help?

what is your lock like? if it's like a little padlock you can make u-shaped fabric tabs coming off the ends for the lock to go thru. is your bf into journals? has he written in them before? no offense but a locking diary sounds a little middle-school girlish....maybe a nice papered photo album with sewn covers would be a better idea with basically the same plan.

he is a very strange boy....even tho he is 21 i call him a boy cause he can act like a 15 year old sometimes...so yeah i'm sure he'll like a journal that locks....

my vision...is....to take fairly large wire, like coat hanger size, and make long U shapes, as deep as the journal....
and then i'd sew through the journal and cover the stitch with endpapers.
the u-s would be on each side, lined up, and the lock would go through.
i need to draw this hahaahaha. it just sounds bad. dumb i mean.
