Container Garden from Reclaimed Materials

This year I decided to try my hand at a container garden, but since we've had containers piling up to be recycled, I felt silly buying plant pots (or maybe I'm just kind of cheap ). I fixed up a few and now they're looking like this:


I started by taking the labels off of 2 kitty litter jugs and 2 coffee cans (note that only the top of the coffee cans are actually metal - the rest is a tough cardboard-y stuff. I'm not sure if that matters, but that's how it is!)


And then I cut the pouring part of the jugs, and smoothed it out as best I could. Not pictured: me using any tool I can find to punch jaggedy holes in the bottoms of the containers for water to run out (I realized only when I put the plants in that I actually missed the holes in one container, and now I have to watch it to be sure it doesn't get over-watered)


Then I spray painted the outside with whatever spray paint we had lurking around. A black for plastics? Perfect! I tried not to get any on the inside, since I figure spray paint + veggies & herbs doesn't mix! 



And there we have it. So far, it's growing well. I've got thyme, "bush pickles" ( a small type of cucumber), oregano, and hot peppers. (Shown in back is a big wild mint plant, in a pot I did not craft)

Love it!  The re-purposed laundry bottles are fantastic.  I will never buy a planter again.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Ahh now I wish I had went ahead and painted my reclaimed containers. Yours are so pretty. But I was lazy so I have a row of empty kitty litter pails in my back yard, all I can say is wow my cats use a lot of litter.

*bangs head on table*  why oh why did I not think of this.... all those kitty litter containers trashed that could have been made into a container garden.

Great idea! Just wish I had come across it sooner.
