Look at these cool coasters I made today for my geeky dad for Christmas!  I saw some somewhere on the net and had to make them!  sorry the pics are huge!

They are 18 beads wide and 19 beads tall.  Just the get you started.  Don't forget the "notch" in the corner!

They are melty beads.  You know, those things that look like little peices of colored tubing chopped up? You find them in the children's craft section.  They usually come in a kit.  You can get them at walmart or michaels or anything.  Sometimes even at the dollar store.  You plan your design on a grid so make sure you get a kit with a big square in it.  We have grids of all shapes (including a kick ass penguin).  It should also come with a handy little piece of wax paper.  You set the beads on the grid and then put the wax paper over it, iron it, and VIOLA!
